Biography
Nik Winchester is a Lecturer in Management at the Open University Business School. Prior to joining the Open University he worked at Cardiff University carrying out a series of research projects focussed on the global regulation with particular emphasis on the maritime sector. He retains an interest in this area, but has expanded his interests to the areas of inter-organisational relations and the links between governance and performance.
Nik has a longstanding research agenda on global regulation, including a groundbreaking comparative study of state regulatory regimes and an innovative study of fraudulent practice within the system of seafarer certification. This acknowledged expertise led to his appointment to the International Labour Organisation during the production of the recent Maritime Labour Convention and to an expert panel on the National Audit Office’s recent assessment of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.
At OUBS Nik has worked on an EU project entitled Learning to collaborate in which he worked collaboratively with 14 European partners to produce e-learning material for use in MBA and executive programmes across Europe and the USA. He has also recently completed a study of Comparative governance arrangements and comparative performance within the NHS, funded by NHS-SDO.
Nik’s research has been funded by a variety of bodies including the European Union, European Maritime Safety Agency, Department for Transport and International Transport Workers Federation. He has a longstanding interest in the area of social theory and writes occasional policy documents including a recent study of Digital Inclusion and Social Housing commissioned by the National Housing Federation.
