Emeritus Professor Pugh has an international reputation as a writer, teacher, researcher and consultant in the fields of organisational behaviour, international management and doctoral education.

He inaugurated and led the Aston Research Programme, a major series of studies on the structure, functioning and performance of organisations, and the effects on the attitudes and behaviour of groups and individuals within them. This began at the University of Aston and later continued at other centres throughout the world.

He joined the OU in 1983 as Professor of Systems and since 1988 has been Professor of International Management at The Open University Business School (Emeritus Professor from 2000). He is joint author of a book on the processes involved in gaining a PhD and regularly consults on the design of doctoral programmes and the training of research supervisors. In 2000 he was one of the first three professors in the field of Business and Management Studies to be elected an Academician of the UK Academy of Learned Societies in the Social Sciences.

Emeritus Professor Pugh has published 15 books and over 100 papers on management topics for both academic and management audiences. Two of his books have been adopted as set texts for the course B201 ‘Business Organisations and their Environments’. He gives regular seminars to the OUBS Doctoral Programme and is currently supervising one PhD student.
