Biography

Jonathan is an ACCA qualified accountant who has also completed other studies in economics, education and management research. Apart from a few years working as an accountant, he has spent the bulk of his career teaching economics, accounting and finance in a number of different roles in South Africa and the UK. Jonathan has been at The Open University Business School since 2004. His main research interests are in accounting education and the influence of neoclassical economics on the accounting profession. He has also been a trustee and treasurer for a number of UK charities and has contributed articles on understanding key aspects of accounting and finance in publications aimed at students of accounting and finance.

Teaching interests

A particular teaching interest of Jonathan's is the use of virtual learning environments to teach introductory bookkeeping and accounting.  Jonathan was the chair in production of the Open University module 'Introduction to Bookkeeping and Accounting' (B190) which is entirely reliant on a virtual learning environment for its presentation.  A more recent interest is teaching introductory economics to accounting students.  Jonathan authored the text 'Management within the Economic Environment' for students of the Open University module 'Management Accounting' (B292).

Research interests

Two particular areas of research interest are the use of problem-based learning in accounting and the use of objective tests in assessing fundamental knowledge and skills in accounting and finance. A project I have recently completed involved designing objective questions in Management Accounting for a UK based professional accountancy body. A second project I have recently completed was migrating Internet based objective questions from a proprietary assessment management system to the open source assessment management system currently used by the Open University. I am currently researching the broad use of the internet as an educational tool for accounting students, particularly as a device to enable students to acquire the knowledge and skills needed for the first stage of professional qualifications in accounting and finance.  A further area of interest is the influence of neoclassical economics on various aspects of accounting and auditing.
