Biography

Since joining the Open University in 2004, Julian has lectured on three law courses, Law: the individual and the state (W201), Employment law and practice (W221) and Rules, rights and justice: an introduction to law (W100). In 2007, he was appointed Regional Manager for Rules, rights and justice: an introduction to law (W100) and, as a course team member, contributed to editorial amendments to course materials as well as writing TMAs. He was appointed as the part-time Law Group Regional Manager in October 2008.

Prior to joining the University, Julian had over twenty years experience as a practising solicitor, initially specialising in criminal defence work. He later trained as a family mediator to compliment his growing family law workload before adding employment law to his practice. He was a senior partner in a rural practice of sixty employees with specific management responsibility for human resources.

Since retiring as a practising solicitor in 2003 Julian has successfully run his own HR and Employment Law consultancy for SMEs. He continues to do some consulting on a part-time basis assisting over 100 businesses across the south of England. He is a member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. Prior to the implementation of the Education Act 2005 Julian was an Ofsted Registered Lay Inspector of Schools and took part in inspections of educational establishments ranging from nurseries through to grammar schools.

Julian's particular interests lie in the practical application of employment law in the workplace and the impact upon performance.
