Professor James Fleck is currently Professor of Innovation Dynamics at The Open University Business School. He was Dean of the Faculty of Business and Law at the Open University from January 2005 to December 2011.
Professor Fleck's research on technology development and innovation has ranged over artificial intelligence, industrial robotics, company-wide information systems, strategic innovations in financial services, multi-media, the design process, and most recently eLearning/ blended Learning, supported by major grants in all these areas. His work on Robotics was recognised by the award of British Association for the Advancement of Science Joseph Lister Lecturer for the Social Sciences for 1995/96.
The predominant focus of his research has been on ICT related or supported innovations, and he was a founder member and Principal Investigator on the major Economic and Social Research Council funded Edinburgh Programme on Information and Communication Technologies (PICT) which ran from 1986 for eight years and led to a number of subsequent European funded ICT related projects. His theoretical work on evolutionary innovation (‘innofusion’) was a key part of the influential Edinburgh ‘social shaping of technology’ approach and is widely cited.
He has written and presented many papers, including international invited lectures at MIT (2003) and the Nobel Foundation at the Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm, November (2002). In 2009, he received an “Excellence in Innovation” award from Indira College of Engineering and Management in Mumbai, and also presented the opening Keynote Lecture at an International Congress on Distance Education in Rio de Janeiro. In recent years he has given invited presentations at the AACSB, EFMD and AMBA annual conferences. Books include: Expertise and Innovation: Information Technology Strategies in the Financial Services Sector (Oxford University Press, 1994, co-authored with Fincham et al.); and Exploring Expertise (Macmillan, 1998, co-edited with Faulkner and Williams).
Professor Fleck has provided consultancy and advice for companies large and small, local government, research institutes, and national governments (including the US Office of Technology Assessment, the UK ESRC, the UK Ministry of Defence and the EU) and has participated in national and international programmes and meetings, notably as a member of the Academic Panel for the UK DTI 2003 Innovation Review, and as a member of the commissioning panel for the £20M ESRC Advanced Institute of Management initiative.
Professor Fleck has been a member and chair of numerous panels for the international accreditation of business schools (AMBA, AACSB and EQUIS). He has also been a board member of EFMD and a member of the AACSB Pre-Accreditation Committee.
