Biography
John is Professor of Human Resource Management at The Open University Business School. He was Professor of Management at the University of Loughborough and Deputy Director of the Business School. Before that he was Principal Research Fellow at Warwick Business School where he lectured on the Warwick Executive MBA and was module leader for the HR course on the Consortium MBA.
He is an Elected Fellow of the British Academy of Management. He was Editor of the Human Resource Management Journal 1994-2000. He is Chairman of the Involvement & Participation Association (IPA). He currently serves on the Editorial Boards of the journal Leadership and the Human Resource Management Journal. He is General Editor of Blackwell's series on Management, Organizations and Business. He is an Associate of the Center for Global Strategic Human Resource Management, Rutgers University, USA and of the ESRC Skills and Knowledge Centre (SKOPE) at Oxford and Warwick University.
He is a member of the UK government's Leadership & Management Panel which advises Ministers in the Department of Business and the Department of Education. He is a non-executive director of the Land Command Personnel Management Board, and he is Chairman of the Executive Board of the IPA. He has consulted at board level for Waitrose, John Lewis, the MOD, Barclays Bank, and KPMG. He has been a Visiting Professor at the National Police Training College.
He has been awarded research grants by the ESRC, the EPSRC, the EU and the Department of Health. He is a current award holder for two research projects funded by the Department of Health research branch. The first is an £150,000 project on the "Possibilities and Pitfalls of Clinical Leadership" and the second is £290,000 project on Technology Adoption in the NHS. He recently completed a £300,000 research contract from the National Health Service on "Governance in the NHS"; was also the lead on a project funded by the Economic & Social Research Council (ESRC) on 'Managers' Business Knowledge'. He has recently completed research contracts for the Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) - for a project on 'Customer Responsive Supply Chains' and, for the ESRC, another project on 'The Management of Innovation'.
He has authored and edited 24 books including Developments in the Management of Human Resources, (Blackwell); Managerial Dilemmas: Exploiting Paradox for Strategic Leadership (Wiley); Managers of Innovation (Blackwell); Governing the New NHS: Issues and Tensions in Health Service Management (Routledge); Human Resource Management: A Critical Text (Thomson Learning); Adding Value Through Information and Consultation (Palgrave Macmillan); The Management of Innovation (Edward Elgar); Leadership in Organizations: Current Issues and Key Trends (Routledge); The Realities of Human Resource Management (with Keith Sisson, Open University Press).
He has published more than 100 journal articles including articles in such international journals as: Journal of Management Studies; Accounting, Organizations and Society; Sociology; International Journal of Human Resource Management; British Journal of Industrial Relations; Journal of Organizational Change Management; International Journal of the Management of Innovation; Work, Employment & Society; Human Resource Management Journal.
Teaching interests
Designed and authored courses in Human Resource Management including authored units, prepared supporting video and audio materials, and assessment methods. Also authored course units for courses on Knowledge Management and Performance Management. Most of this teaching work is at MBA level.
Research interests
Key research interests revolve around the management of work organisations; strategic aspects of human resource management; management of knowledge at strategic levels; leadership and management development; the management of innovation and change; strategic management; the linkages between governance, leadership and management in health services.
