Kirstie Ball comments on NSA surveillance

Kirstie comments on Hagues’ claims that data used by British intelligence complied with the law.

In an article that examines claims UK spies used American-gathered intelligence to circumvent British law (Christian Science Monitor, 10th of June edition), Kistie Ball offered expert comment on intercontinental information exchange and surveillance.

In particular, Kirstie said the use of information by a foreign power was a grey area. Even if the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act sets out clear rules on surveillance, a lot of the information are gathered abroad so escape regulations. She added that “one of the things Mr. Snowden said was that colleagues at the NSA were constructing suspicion out of the data, which is not the same as monitoring information, which is a concern”.

The article can be read here.

Kirstie Ball is Reader in Surveillance and Organisation (Open University Business School), and involved in various project on surveillance and security. More details here.
