CEPSAR members on fieldwork in Caucasus region

Keli flowsCEPSAR professor Nigel Harris, Dr Ian Parkinson (University of Bristol) and OU post-graduate Sam Bewick have recently returned from Georgia following a joint field trip to the Caucasus as part of an ongoing collaboration between the Institute of Geophysics, Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University and the Open University. The trip focussed on mapping and sampling Quaternary magmatism both in the Greater Caucasus (Mt Kazbegi) and in the Javakheti Plateau region of the Lesser Caucasus. The project objectives are to constrain the sources of melting and define the mechanisms responsible for the vast outpourings of intermediate lavas throughout much of the Caucasus, and to link these to the evolving tectonics of the region. More details are available from the HIT Research pages.
