Harold Silver

Visiting Professor

Harold was Professor of education and social history at the University of London before becoming principal (1978-1986) of Bulmershe College of Higher Education. Since 1986 his consultancy and research work has included three years as special advisor (research development) to the president of Lock Haven State University, Pennsylvania; two years as senior consultant to the ministry of education, The Bahamas, on the reorganisation of post-secondary education. He has been a visiting scholar at Georgia State University, Indiana University’s Centre for Advanced Studies, the Rockefeller Study Centre, Bellagio, Italy (twice), and the universities of British Columbia and Alberta.  He has an MA and PhD from the University of Cambridge, an MEd from the University of Hull, and a DLitt from the Council for National Academic Awards.  He has honorary doctorates from the Universities of Plymouth and the University of Winchester.  Author of books on education policy, history of education and higher education (the most recent being Tradition and Higher Education).  Has conducted research projects on many aspects of external examining (including for CHERI), higher education in further education, assessment in higher education and other aspects of higher education.  Has been visiting professor and consultant at a large number of higher education institutions.
