How to apply

We’re different to other universities

When you’re applying for your Open University degree, you don’t have to go through UCAS like you do with other universities. Most of our degree courses also begin twice a year, in October and February, unlike other universities where courses only begin in the autumn. You normally reserve a place on the course and then pay your fees.

You can make your reservation at The Open University:

  • By phone on 0845 300 6090. Remember to check if you are entitled to a Part-Time Fee Grant or are able to use an ILA Scotland learner account
  • Online by clicking the ‘Click to register’ button on the course description page
  • By email at scotland@open.ac.uk

When should I register?

Each course has a registration closing date. If you possibly can, register earlier so that you can be sure of your place and get started on any preparatory work in plenty of time.

Checking if you’re entitled to financial support

Course fees apply for most of our courses, but before you start thinking about how to pay, you need to check to see if you’re eligible for a free place or financial support. Find out what financial support you’re entitled to

Credit transfer

If you’d like to transfer credit from your HNC, HND or SVQ course, you need to apply in good time to enable us to process your application ready for the start of the course. Find out more about credit transfer

Employer sponsorship

Thousands of students each year have their fees partially or fully paid by their employer. Why not check whether your employer would be willing to sponsor you or contribute to the cost of your degree? Learn more about employer sponsorship
