Mike Niblett, Army

The OU was key to his plans for a new career when he retired at 42, even if it meant studying in a helicopter flying between bases in Afghanistan and dodging Taliban rockets. Andy Murray, Royal Navy

Father of two Andy Murray is the perfect example of how you can study for an OU degree in any circumstances. Working in the Navy while studying for his engineering degree, he once completed a maths exam in a Navy ship’s dining room, with a gas mask round his neck and Tomahawk missiles flying overhead! Andy served 22 years before leaving in 2009 and his degree enabled him to get a job as a gas turbine engineer. Read more.

Flight Lt James Coulman, Royal Air Force

Flight Lt James Coulman gained his undergraduate degree at a traditional university, but due to financial and personal reasons he couldn't afford to stay on and study full time. An opportunity came up shortly after he joined the RAF to study his MEng with the OU - so he took it. He says that his MEng has put him in good stead to maximise his career potential and and become a chartered engineer, which is his ultimate goal. Read more.
