Why the OU?

  • Being so flexible, our learning style is well suited to the way you live and work today. Because you are in the Armed Forces, you can take advantage of Enhanced Learning Credits and the special relationship between the MOD and ourselves. The MOD, along with IBM, Oxford University and the NHS, is among 1,300 major employers who regularly choose us to help develop their staff.

Accessibility and support

  • From a wide range of subject areas, OU certificate, diploma and degree courses let you mix and match according to your interests and needs. Most of our undergraduate courses have no formal entry requirements. The qualifications you’ll achieve with us are the ones that matter.

  • No-one understands how adults learn better than us. We’re open to all and our mission is to continue to be a world leader in the design, content and delivery of supported open learning.

  • We are renowned for the high quality of our student support service. We have professional careers and education advisers to support your OU study choices and career planning.

  • Networking is a way of life for OU students. For instance, our Business School has students in over 100 countries and a global network of more than 89,000 alumni and 700 tutors. Amid such a vibrant and enthusiastic student community, you’re never on your own.

Quality, reputation and recognition

  • We’ve worked closely with the MOD for a long time, supporting in-service education and training. More than 1,500 service personnel and their dependents are currently taking advantage of our special relationship.

  • We signed The Corporate Covenant in March 2016, underlining our commitment to the Armed Forces and pledging to continue supporting servicemen and women with access to flexible higher education. We support members of the Armed Forces into Higher Education, recognise the value of military skills and offer a stepping stone to a new career post-service.

"By helping create employment for service leavers, offering flexibility to the reservists they employ and opportunities for accessible higher education to those in service, The Open University is championing our Armed Forces in the education field.”

Mark Lancaster TD MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary and Minister for Defence Personnel, Welfare and Veterans

"The OU has a long and proud association with the Armed Forces, from offering serving personnel the opportunity to study while on tour, to ensuring veterans have the skills they need to take into the workplace once they leave the forces.

Keith Zimmerman,The Open University’s Secretary

    • You only pay UK prices wherever your duties take you.

    • You pay for each module separately – you don’t pay for a whole qualification up front.

    • A qualification comprises a series of modules, each with an individual fee. Added together, they give you the total cost.

    • Undergraduate modules cost £1,464 (30 credits) or £2,928 (60 credits).*

    • Most OU students study 60 credits a year over six years for an honours degree.

    • Fees include OU course materials, tutor support, assessments, and exams.

    • Employer sponsorship – around one in ten OU students are sponsored by their employer. If your study relates to work, your employer may be prepared to pay some or all of your fees.

We’re here to help. From student loans and monthly payment plans to financial support, we’re confident we can help you find a flexible payment option that’s right for you and could even mean you pay nothing at all. More information can be found at Fees and funding.

*2018/19 prices based on the standard (EN) fee; fees normally increase annually in line with inflation and the University's strategic approach to fees.

Career opportunities

  • High academic standards ensure that OU qualifications are recognised and valued by professional organisations and employers like KPMG, Unilever, NHS, John Lewis, O2, Royal Mail, Heinz, Pfizer and Rolls Royce.

  • The OU will provide you with a degree respected everywhere – and an inspiring, challenging, rewarding experience you won't find anywhere else.
