Recognition of prior learning

If you have previously completed units from an NVQ qualification that can be matched to units on the QCF qualification you would like to register for, then you may be eligible for recognition of prior learning (RPL).

You can find out more about this at Recognition of prior learning.

Meeting your VQ needs

You can see the university’s disability equality scheme and action plan here.

The Open University is committed to offering disabled students and anyone who has a health condition, mental health disability or a specific learning difficulty access to all our qualifications. In the Vocational Qualification Assessment Centre we will do all we can to provide you with services that meet their requirements however we cannot guarantee that we will always be able to provide all services requested. We will aim to give as much notice as we can of any limit on our services.

When you register for a vocational qualification, we will ask if you have a disability or additional requirement that might affect your progress. If you answer ‘yes’ we will contact you directly to discuss your requirements. If you have additional requirements and do not let us know, we may not be able to support you effectively.

We will treat all the information you give to us as confidential and will use it only to provide you with services as a learner.

Extension to End Date

You will see that your qualification has a stated end date. Although you can work through the qualification at your own pace and may complete sooner than the End date, if you do not complete your registered qualification by the stated end date you can apply for an extension which if approved will incur additional fees.

VQAC will review your application for an extension, taking into account

  • The final certification date for your qualification, that is the date set by our awarding organisation
  • The progress you have made so far and the regularity with which you have submitted work for assessment since you first registered for your qualification
  • The amount of communication you have had with VQAC including responding to mailings about your progress

If your application for an extension is approved, you will need to pay additional fees for an extension to the End Date of your qualification as follows:

Length of extension Fee
3 months £200
6 months £400
9 months £600
