Information on recognition of prior learning

Recognition of prior learning

If you have previously completed units from an NVQ qualification that can be matched to units on the QCF qualification you would like to register for, then you may be eligible for RPL.

What it is

RPL is method of assessment (leading to the award of credit) that considers whether a learner can demonstrate that they can meet the assessment requirements for a unit through the knowledge, understanding or skills that they already possess and so, do not need to develop these through a course of learning.

It enables the recognition of achievement from a range of activities using any valid assessment methodology.  Provided that the assessment requirements of a given unit or qualification have been met, the use of RPL is acceptable for accrediting a unit, units or a whole qualification.  Evidence of learning must be both valid and reliable.

Currency of qualification

No specific time frame is put on previous qualifications being eligible for RPL.  However, you may be expected to demonstrate current competence if your certificate was awarded more than two years previously from the time you register for your QCF qualification.  For example, you would be expected to have updated your knowledge on current legislation and practice.

Other learning and development activities

If you have completed other relevant non-accredited learning and development activities you may want to use these as evidence for your QCF qualification.  You can contact VQAC prior to registering or you can discuss this with your assessor once you have begun working on your qualification.
