About the OU

Although you might have heard of The Open University (OU) you may not know that much about us or what we do. Hopefully we can clear that up right now!

So what is The Open University?

We’re one of Europe’s biggest universities offering about 600 exciting courses - everything from beginner right through to degree level. Our qualifications are highly respected by employers and other universities all around the world because of the quality of our teaching and the unique way our flexible learning helps people fit study around their lives. Also, The Open University is consistently one of the top three UK universities for student satisfaction; a position we’ve held since the National Student Survey began in 2005.

Learning which comes to you, not the other way round

Unlike other universities, we don’t have a campus. Our students study in their own space and time using a range of exciting materials delivered to them by post, online and email. It’s a brilliantly flexible way to learn, allowing you to fit study around your social life and existing study or work commitments.

Taking the distance out of distance learning

Although most of your study is done in your own space and time, your Open University tutor or study adviser will be there to help you by phone, email or sometimes face to face. We also have a huge and vibrant online study community - perfect for tapping into when you’re stuck on something or need a little extra encouragement.

If you’re studying with The Open University through YASS, you’ll also have the support of your school YASS coordinator and the other YASS students at your school.
