CNAA Pro-Forma Verification

Important notes: This page is for former CNAA students only.
WE CANNOT VERIFY AWARDS GAINED THROUGH STUDY DIRECTLY WITH THE OPEN UNIVERSITY.  For verification of an Open University direct (distance learning) award, please contact the Qualifications Centre via ACC-Gen@open.ac.uk.
For third party requests (e.g. employers and agencies), please refer to the menu to the right of the page.

The Open University maintains a digital archive of records of course awards issued by the Council for National Academic Awards (CNAA), as follows:

  • Undergraduate and Postgraduate Awards
  • Honorary Degrees and Higher Doctorates
  • Research Degrees
  • National Council for Diplomas in Art and Design and Higher Diplomas in Art and Design (NCDAD)
  • National Council for Technological Awards (NCTA)
  • Scottish Diplomas in Art (SDA)
  • Conversion of awards of NCDAD, NCTA, DipArt and Art and Design Associateship of Central Institutions in Scotland to CNAA degrees.
  • Department of Education and Science Diplomas in Management Studies (DMS)

When CNAA was abolished the Department of Education and Science did not authorise any successor body to issue certificates following dissolution. Consequently it is not possible for the OU or any other body to provide certificates or to issue duplicate or replacement certificates relating to CNAA awards. Instead the OU offers a pro-forma verification document styled in a similar format to an award certificate. A fee of £56 is currently charged for this service.

Important notes:

  • We can only accept applications from undergraduate and postgraduate CNAA awards, National Council for Diplomas in Art and Design (NCDAD) and Higher Diploma in Art and Design awards. CNAA were offered from 1965-1992 and so any awards outside of these dates were not CNAA awards.
  • Do not apply if you have a BTEC, HND, ONC, City and Guilds award, Polytechnic diploma or any other university (including Open University direct awards)
  • All Pro Forma verifications will be sent to UK mainland addresses by 1st class post or internationally by the Royal Mail 'Signed For' service.
  • Applications cannot be submitted by telephone. We endeavour to respond within 7 working days of receipt of an application.
  • The loss or destruction of an original certificate does not in any way invalidate the award - the record of the award will continue to be held and can be verified and attested from this original record in the ways described above. However it is important to emphasise that no further awards may be made and no new, replacement or duplicate award documents may be produced in the name of, or by authority of, the awarding powers of CNAA.
  • We may be able to offer letters that provide additional information to what is contained in the Proforma Verification document. Please contact us to discuss your requirements. Please note there will be a £56 charge for each letter produced.
  • Student transcripts: We cannot provide student transcripts. If you wish to obtain a transcript relating to all or any part of the programme you undertook as a student, please apply directly to the institution at which you studied.
  • If we are unable to locate your award record, we will refund 50% of the fee you have paid. We will contact you by email to let you know that we have been unable to provide verification of your award.
  • Please read the Terms and Conditions before making an application.

Turnaround times for Proforma Verifications are currently 5-7 working days.
