To benefit from this course you need
some basic skills. The following questions will help you to
decide whether you have them
| Word
processor skills
You will need to use a word processor,
ideally MS Word, to prepare documents for your tutor
to mark. |
| Can you |
- create a document and save it?
- produce documents which are split
into paragraphs?
- make sections of text bold and/or
italic?
- cut some text from a document
and place it elsewhere in the document?

If the answer to all these questions is yes, you have the necessary
word processing skills.
Browser
skills You will be making
heavy use of a browser to visit websites. |
| Can you |
- open a website given its address
e.g. http://www.open.ac.uk ?
- use underlined links e.g. http://www.open.ac.uk
to move from one website to another?
- move from your current website
to one that you have previously visited?

Installing
and downloading software
Occasionally we will ask you
to install some software, for example Block 2 requires
the use of a Netscape browser. |
| Can you |
- install commercial software from
a CD-ROM onto your computer?
- download a file using a browser?
|
