Higher Technical Qualifications

Higher Technical Qualifications

Developed with employers and approved by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education, a Higher Technical Qualification (HTQ) from the OU will give you the skills you need to succeed in your career, whether you’re just starting out or looking to upskill and retrain.

What are HTQs?

Higher Technical Qualifications (HTQs) offer a high-quality route for students to develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required for roles in demand from employers.

Approved by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education, these qualifications are aimed at both college and school leavers or those retraining and upskilling.

HTQs are based on the same employer developed occupational standards as apprenticeships but don’t require employment as an apprentice.

Key features

  • A high-quality alternative to other routes, such as apprenticeships, traineeships or degrees
  • Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education approved qualifications

Accreditation

The Open University is among the first to offer HTQs, with three approved courses aimed at those wishing to pursue careers in software development, network engineering, or nursing.

A Global Systems Engineer is the kind of job I thought I could only dream of. Then a friend told me about the OU. Their flexibility meant I could study while continuing to work. Things went so well my coursework got published as a white paper and landed me my dream role. This is where the OU took me. Where could an HTQ with the OU take you?
