Leading work with young people: supported APEL route

This is a supported APEL (Accreditation of prior experiential learning) module for students with substantial recent experience of working with young people, and substantial knowledge of the theoretical basis of this type of work. It will widen and deepen your understanding of the policies, practices and contexts of working with young people, particularly aged 13–19. You will examine the leadership roles that practitioners adopt and the roles they play as members of teams, organisations and interagency partnerships. The module takes leadership to be a process of working with and through others to achieve shared objectives.

What you will study

You will complete this module in four months rather than the normal academic year. Through the printed Study Topics, DVD and module reader, you’ll explore and analyse a range of perspectives on leading work with young people. Throughout, you’ll be encouraged to review and analyse your own experiences as a learner and a practitioner.

By the end of the module you will have developed your understanding of:

  • meanings of leadership and management in the context of work with young people
  • planning, setting up and maintaining learning opportunities for young people with diverse needs and abilities in a range of contexts
  • supporting and developing individuals and teams in an organisation
  • managing change and its impact on organisations and practices
  • principles and practices of working in partnership with other agencies
  • principles and practices of evaluation and accountability.

Vocational relevance

This module is aimed at practitioners working in a wide range of settings involving work with young people. You might, for example, be involved in:

  • running a youth club
  • working with young people on a housing estate
  • participating in a church group
  • advising young people on health or careers
  • mentoring young people
  • working with a group of Scouts or Guides.

Outside the UK

This module is available in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Teaching and assessment

Support from your tutor

You will have a tutor who will help you with the study material and who will mark and comment on your written work. EZL132 does not have any face-to-face tutorial sessions, but you can ask your tutor for advice and guidance. If you are new to the OU, you will find that your tutor will be particularly concerned to help you with your study methods.

You will be expected to submit your tutor-marked assignments (TMAs) online through the eTMA system unless there are some difficulties which prevent you from doing so. In these circumstances, you must negotiate with your tutor to get their agreement to submit your assignment on paper.

The end-of-module assessment (EMA) must be submitted online. The TMAs are not compulsory and your marks for them will not contribute to your grade for the module, which will depend solely on the EMA. However, they will be very useful in helping you to judge how you are doing with the module, and confirm that you are on track to complete the EMA successfully and pass the module.

In the TMAs, you will be given choices of study material to cover, to enable you to concentrate on the material that is new to you. The EMA, however, will cover the module as a whole. You will be given more detailed information when you begin the module.

Entry

This is an OU level 1 module. OU level 1 modules provide the core subject knowledge and study skills support needed for both higher education and distance learning, to help you to progress to OU level 2 study. 

You should only register on this module if you have substantial experience of work with young people, knowledge of the theoretical basis of this work and a readiness for study at Higher Education level. To help you judge whether your experience is sufficient, we have prepared some guidance (titled ‘EZL132 or E132 Choice document’) that is available from the Foundation Degree in Working with Young People website. If you have any doubt whether your knowledge and experience are sufficient, you are strongly recommended to register on the parent module E132.

Preparatory work

There are no formal qualification requirements for students joining the module. However, if you have no prior experience of higher education, or if you have not studied for some time, we would strongly advise you to make use of the OU’s wide range of introductory modules and packs.

Open University Student Budget Account

The Open University Student Budget Accounts Ltd (OUSBA) offers a convenient 'pay as you go' option to pay your OU fees, which is a secure, quick and easy way to pay. Please note that The Open University works exclusively with OUSBA and is not able to offer you credit facilities from any other provider. All credit is subject to status and proof that you can afford the repayments.

You pay the OU through OUSBA in one of the following ways:

  • Register now, pay later – OUSBA pays your module fee direct to the OU. You then repay OUSBA interest-free and in full just before your module starts. 0% APR representative. This option could give you the extra time you may need to secure the funding to repay OUSBA.
  • Pay by instalments – OUSBA calculates your annual fees and spreads them out over up to a year, enabling you to pay your fees monthly and walk away with a qualification without any further debt. APR 5.1% representative.

You can pay part or all of your tuition fees upfront with a debit or credit card when you register for each module. 

We accept American Express, Maestro (UK only), Mastercard, Visa/Delta and Visa Electron. 

Gift vouchers

You can pay for part or all of your tuition fees with OU gift vouchers. Vouchers are currently available in the following denominations, £10, £20, £50 and £100. 

Mixed payments

We know that sometimes you may want to combine payment options. You may, for example wish to pay part of your tuition fee with a debit card and pay the remainder in instalments through an Open University Student Budget Accounts (OUSBA).

You will need a computer with internet access to study this module as it includes online activities, which you can access using a web browser.

The module makes significant use of audio and visual materials that are made available to students on DVD-ROM. These can be played on either a personal computer or standard DVD player.

Written transcripts of any audio components and Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) versions of printed materials are available. Some Adobe PDF components may not be available or fully accessible using a screen reader. The books are available in a comb-bound format.
