Study materials

Many of our modules include core study materials, such as CDs, DVDs, books and specially written texts, which you’ll receive by post when your module starts. They’re yours to keep so you can write notes on them, highlight sections, underline key points, add comments and stick bits in.

Tutorials

Tutorials are an opportunity to learn with other students studying your course. We know that students who attend tutorials, achieve better outcomes. Tutorials can be face to face, online or both, and the number available will vary depending on what you choose to study. Our online tutorials use a range of collaborative tools so you can participate in a virtual classroom from wherever you have a connection. The distance you have to travel to for a face-to-face tutorial will depend on where your fellow students are located. You will have access to your tutorial schedule before your course starts.

Did you know?

Our materials are so good that two thirds of the UK's biggest universities use them too.

Use our app to study

OU Anywhere

You can also access course materials on your smartphone or tablet.

'OU Anywhere' gives you the option to download your textbooks, videos and other materials to make it easier to study wherever you are. You'll still get the box in the post – but the app gives you even more flexibility.

Learn online

Online resources

You'll have access to online resources such as podcasts, broadcasts, computer software and interactive teaching materials; and a dedicated website for the module you’re studying. Our huge online library has thousands of online ejournals, ebooks, databases and multimedia resources for you to tap into, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, whenever you need them and wherever you are.

Planning your study

Essential extras

You'll get a study timetable to help you plan your reading, activities and assignments; details of when and where tutorials and study days (which could be face-to-face or online) will take place; and the dates and venues of any exams. And before you begin, an online induction programme to familiarise you with the OU's style of learning will get you off to a great start.
