This course introduces the principles and methods of action research and the model of teacher as researcher. Teachers then identify a research question of significance to work on, investigate that question and consider how to act on their findings to best influence school improvement.

Using VLEs in my teaching

This course introduces the various components of a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and explores how VLEs can be used to support pupil learning and assessment.
Key learning outcomes for the course include:

  • to become familiar with the basic functions of a VLE
  • to consider the possibilities that VLEs offer teachers and pupils
  • to explore current research into the application of VLEs in the classroom
  • to apply this knowledge in a class or school setting; lesson planning, delivery or assessment.

Using data smartly in your classroom

This course explores the use of data within your school and classroom and will help you develop confidence in the use of data to support your pupils’ learning.

Key learning outcomes for the course include

  • to understand the range of classroom data available to teachers
  • to know how to analyse sets of data and draw conclusions for teaching
  • to understand the uses of cognitive ability and prior attainment analyses for setting targets for pupils
  • to evaluate a number of different methods to feedback performance information to pupils and / or parents/ carers.

Teaching primary languages

Teaching reading: linguistic phonics

Do you want to teach phonics in your classroom?  Does time out of the classroom attending courses cause problems for your school?  Through this online course, based on the face-to-face instructional programmed developed by Sounds~Write, an independent literacy training provider, you can learn how to teach reading and spelling using a linguistic phonics approach.  Learn all key elements for reading and spelling through conceptual understanding, factual knowledge and the three essential skills: blending, segmenting and phoneme manipulation. The course provides practitioners with a consistent approach to phonics which can be used for whole class, small group or one to one teaching.
