Developing a workplace travel plan
This section introduces the hospital case study to show the realities of travel plans in practice. Although other types of organisation could have been selected (such as government departments, shopping centres, office complexes, etc.), hospitals have been chosen because they clearly illustrates a range of key challenges faced by the designers of a travel plan for a large organisation. Furthermore, hospitals have to balance a large number of often conflicting demands. They:
- have a large number of employees (the NHS is the largest employer in the UK)
- need to have good access for ambulances
- attract a great number of users and visitors
- need to be accessible to people who have a variety of disabilities
- require sufficient freight access.
