REF2014 Results

Education at the Open University is ranked 2nd in the UK in terms of research power (which takes into account the quality of the submission and the number of people submitted). Our work submitted to the REF has thus been endorsed as overwhelmingly world-leading and internationally excellent, with significant and wide-reaching impact, and located in an environment that supports world-leading quality research.  These fantastic results cement our position as a world leader in education innovation.

The overall profile of each submission is made up of three elements, namely output (65%), impact (20%) and environment (15%), each of which are allocated a rating between 4* (highest) and unclassified (lowest). In terms of the quality of our overall profile we are in the top 20 in the UK. We markedly improved our research outputs compared to RAE2008. Notably, we are ranked joint 1st for environment as we were awarded 100% at 4* level for environment. For the first time the impact of research has also been measured; our education submission has been rated 60% at 4* and 20% at 3*star level, giving us rank 16 in education. When these are multiplied by the number of researchers who were submitted results in us being 2nd in the UK for education on power rating (out of 79 institutions); a testament to the commitment and success of the many researchers in CREET.
