If you are a classroom or teaching assistant with at least one year of experience of supporting children in the primary age range (5 to 11 years) this degree will help you to develop the knowledge and skills required in this work. If you are a more experienced practitioner working towards HLTA status, studying for the foundation degree will help you in gathering the necessary evidence.
The foundation degree is a specialist pathway within the Teacher Development Agency (TDA) Framework for Foundation Degrees for the Children’s Workforce (2008) and has been developed with input from schools and local authorities. The degree supports the professional development and learning of practitioners who play an increasingly important role in supporting children’s learning in primary schools, and will enable you to attain the skills and knowledge required to gain appropriate professional status in schools and settings relevant to your role.
The foundation degree combines desk-based academic learning and practical workplace activities. For some courses, you must be employed or work in a volunteer capacity in a primary school for at least 5 hours a week.
At level 1 you will consider your own learning history and your role in supporting children’s learning. You will observe and evaluate children’s development as you study a range of issues in supporting learners such as environments, play, creativity, rights and inclusion. You will reflect on your relationships with children, parents, families and colleagues, and you will carry out small-scale enquiries into children’s learning in primary school.
At level 2 you will deepen your knowledge and understanding of children’s learning in the core curriculum subjects (language and literacy, mathematics and science) as you enhance your own subject knowledge. You will also select from a range of optional courses in education or child development, depending on your area of interest.
Throughout the courses you will engage with and reflect upon your own personal and professional learning and gather evidence to demonstrate your professional growth. You will also develop transferable skills in ICT, teamwork, problem-solving and communication. The foundation degree will prepare you to engage in further study and enhanced practice in diverse schools and primary settings.
While studying for this degree, you’ll achieve a Certificate in Supporting Learning in Primary schools (C60). You can also top this up to an honours degree in Childhood and Youth (B23).
