Emjanyana Senior Primary School
'The DEEP project has been of advantage to our pupils, educators and the community since we are in the most remote area. The presence of the computer has uplifted the school's standard. Educators are motivated. Enrolment at school is a bit higher. "Long live the DEEP project", "Inkanyezi Long live"'.
(Emjanyana Senior Primary School Principal)
EMJANYANA Senior Primary School is a rural school serving an isolated and underprivileged area, faced with severe infrastructure problems. All the teachers with one exception are women and the majority of learners come from families of low socio-economic status. The school has no telephone or electricity and the nearest bus route is 47 kilometers away. School fees are R5-00 per annum for foundation pupils (50 English pence) - approximately 56% of learners are unable to make these payments. The school staff work collaboratively in these challenging circumstances.
This acrostic poem Gawulayo (the chopping disease) was written by one of the DEEP educators early in the project. It reflected her feelings about the impact of AIDS on local communities and families.
