Empumalanga Junior Secondary School
'As we live in the world of technology it is of importance that one should be aware of technology...I just didn't want my learners to be left behind'.
The main benefit of using the Jornada is that the information is fresh, especially when one can connect to the Internet. The use of the camera helped me a lot as well, as I took pictures which were important to me and my learners'.

Empumalanga is a rural school located in the Butterworth DEEP cluster group. The area is affected by poverty, unemployment, environmental degradation, lack of social amenities and inadequate infrastructures. AIDS has taken a heavy toll on the local community. School fees are between R10 and 30 per annum (1- 3 British pounds). The school has over 300 learners (180 girls and 120 boys) and 11 teachers.
The learners have used the computer for a wide range of activities, including natural science. The powerpoint presentation on amphibians was created by a group of pupils who were researching the local pond life, as summarised in the Excel spreadsheets they also made.
