Nzondelelo Senior Primary School is a peri-urban school, situated south of King Williamstown. A deteriorating network of infrastructure, unreliable water supplies, inadequate hospital buildings and scarce communal facilities serves the area, like many other parts of the Eastern Cape. The government has dedicated funds to the construction of classrooms, toilets and administration blocks in schools. A good transport system is in place and the school has electricity, telephone, fax and copier facilities for staff to use. However, there is no library, TV or radio and the school has minimal classroom resources.
Confronted with HIV/AIDS and diseases spread by mal-sanitation, the death rate in the area is high. One of the project teachers has used the DEEP ICT to support a range of community activities around Love Life, a group dedicated to positive sexuality.
The school has used the hand held computers to support natural science fieldwork in the local environment. This PowerPoint 'Invertebrates' was made by a group of DEEP pupils as part of this work. The video clip shows these Grade 7 learners presenting their work at the affirmation ceremony to a large crowd - with increasing confidence as they go along ' and here we are looking for a crab but unfortunately for us it was impossible for us to catch it' . The video was recorded by a DEEP learner.
