Van Coller Primary School
'The community is taken with the DEEP project because it empowers their children'
(School principal)
'I did not know by using my fingers I could be where I am today.
It was hard using a computer but now it's easy and enjoyable. Now I know how to use the computer my family is proud of me'.
(Van Coller learner, age 12)
Van Coller is currently the largest DEEP school in the Eastern Cape with 950 learners (550 girls and 410 boys). It is part of the Queenstown cluster and serves the extremely poor 'location' on the outskirts of Queenstown, where poverty and unemployment are the norm.
The majority of learners come from low-income families and 40% are unable to pay the modest school fees. The school is known for its exceptional musical prowess and the learners have won many awards for their singing.
