Vuselela Combined Primary School

'Yes, I have changed as a result of the DEEP project. Our interpersonal relations have changed -we now have good relations with other teachers, because we have to involve them when we are integrating across curricula. The atmosphere in the classroom is relaxed and learning is fun'.

'I have a more friendly relationship with my learners. Lessons encourage active involvement of both learners and teachers'.

'The Jornada saves me time because it's easy to carry it around. I do all my work and then just transfer my work onto the laptop'.

'Thanks to DEEP we are important and recognised amongst the members of the community because of what we can deliver to them using the computer'.

Vuselela Combined Primary School is situated on the Whittlesea road close to Queenstown. The project teachers there lead the Queenstown DEEP cluster. The school was opened in 1999 as part of a government community programme but is still without electricity or phone lines. No transport serves the area and there is a high rate of unemployment in the surrounding communities. Resources are limited within the school for the 817 learners (360 boys and 475 girls) and 22 teachers.

In this video clip the learners explain in their own words why they have found the computer useful to their learning.
