'In the past I didn't have resources. I would ask my learners to imagine that they are seeing a cow in front of them, for example. That didn't bring good results.

When I created a presentation for the students, they began to imitate me. One of the students made their own presentation in English language...at first I used the computer alone. Now I encourage the students to use the computer, and we monitor, encourage them...I think there is interaction between the teacher and the students, when the computer is used as an educational aid'.

Zwartwater Rural Senior Primary is a small farm school serving only 155 learners in the Queenstown DEEP cluster group. It has electricity, but no telephone. The small classrooms have dirt floors and though brightly painted and cleanly swept are small, affording little light.

The local community has used the project computer for its local work - for instance to apply for a sheep shearing shed for the local woolgrowers' association. The children have used it mainly to develop literacy and numeracy skills and have enjoyed the DEEP project studying the local environment.

The video clip shows the reaction of a group of learners seeing their work printed out from the laptop for the very first time.
