In October 2004, DEEP: South Africa was a competition winner for 25 IPAQ handheld computers, sponsored by bridges.org. This project builds on the phase 1 DEEP research and is specifically focused on:
- Handheld training for professional learning and classroom teaching;
- Developed case studies and examples of practice that can be used as a models for other teachers in South Africa;
- Further evidence that it is broadly feasible to keep digital equipment secure and functioning in challenging rural contexts.
We are investigating the following research questions:
- What specific advantages do handheld computers offer teacher professional development?
- In what ways do handheld computers complement other professional resources?
- What curriculum developments are enabled by such devices / what software development would enhance their use?
All schools and participants are located in the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa.
During the research we used the following eBook resources:
Literacy (665KB)
Science (460KB)
