DEEP: South Africa
November 2005 - March 2007
Partners:
Open University UK & The Nelson Mandela Foundation's Unit of Rural Schooling & Development (URSD)
Funders: URSD

In the Eastern Cape, DEEP has become integrated with the Unit for Rural Schooling and Development (URSD) - a partnership between the University of Fort Hare and the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
DEEP is carrying out an evaluation of the URSD's ICT strategy in the Eastern Cape and jointly working with the URSD on a 5 year plan for future ICT developments.
Between November 2005 and March 2007 the DEEP research in the Eastern Cape will be extended to more rural schools, including the Nelson Mandela Schools of Excellence. Most of the teachers trained during DEEP Phase 1 will act as teacher leaders and researchers in this new research development.
We are investigating the following research questions:
- How does ICT transform the pedagogic knowledge and practice of teachers and the communities in which they work?
- What is the impact of ICT-enhanced and ICT-transformed stratagies on pupil acheivement and motivation?
- How can teacher education and training be developed to exploit the potential of ICT to ensure teacher capacity and quality?
