Egypt

A stuffy, dim classroom 20 miles north of the luxurious hotels of Luxor, on the Nile in Egypt. Three 9-year-old girls sharing a desk built for one excitedly answer questions about the time. They use clocks they have constructed themselves with cardboard carefully saved by their young teacher. Egypt has a population of 71 million. It is one of the nine high population countries targeted for improving literacy. More than 30 million adults are non-literate, 1 million girls are estimated to be out of school.
