Tell us what you need for residential schools

At residential school your studies can involve a number of different activities, for example

  • writing notes and making presentations
  • taking part in activities, practical work or field trips
  • taking part in discussions.

Some of these activities may be quite challenging for you, so consider what facilities or support would be of assistance to you. For example, there is a range of equipment for residential school that can be loaned for short-term use.

If you have registered for a module or are already a registered OU student you can complete the request form to tell us about

  • the ways in which you would like support for your studies or
  • changes to services you have already requested.

We will send you a copy of the booklet Meeting your needs at residential school when we receive your request, or you can download a PDF copy . It explains the services we offer and includes a guide to completing your Request for residential school arrangements (Facilities Request 2) form.

Three points to consider

How much information do I need to give?

We will ask you to tell us

  • your Open University computer username (OUCU) and password, or Personal Identifier number, and other details such as your date of birth
  • briefly about your disability, illness or impairment
  • whether you have particular requirements for residential school arrangements, such as particular accommodation needs or an assistant
  • that you agree to our Data Protection Policy.

You will also have the chance to note any other comments or concerns you have.

What happens when I submit my form?

We forward your form to your regional or national centre, and they then contact you to confirm your requirements. The University will do its best to provide services that enable you to study effectively but we can't guarantee that all the services and facilities you ask for will be available or approved.

If you submit your form online you will be given a reference number. Please use it when contacting your regional or national centre with queries.

Forms will normally be processed within 15 working days, but applications from students who are about to start their study will be prioritised over those starting later.

What if I change my mind?

If you change your mind after you have submitted your form, or if your circumstances change, you can contact us by telephone, post, email or the online form.

Please remember that there is always a slight delay in your record being updated. If you wish to make changes before your previous requests have been processed and authorised, please do so via email or telephone so that we can avoid working with out-of-date information.

When in doubt, please contact your regional or national centre.

Choose how to submit your form.

  1. Complete your request online. You will need your Open University computer username (OUCU) or Personal Identifier number.
  2. Discuss your requirements with the Disability Resource Team and request a printed copy of the form.
