I have been a Lecturer in French at the Open University since 2005 and Head of French since January 2008.
I am currently joint module team chair of L192 Beginners' French and chair of the production of the next edition of L120 Intermediate French.
Before joining the Open University, I taught at Worcester College, Oxford, and at the Sorbonne Nouvelle in Paris. I was a visiting lecturer at Dartmouth College, USA, in 1993-94.
Since I started working at the Open University, I have written course materials for most of our French modules. I am currently joint module team chair of L192 Beginners' French and chair of the production of the next edition of L120 Intermediate French. In the past I was also joint team chair of L150 Intermediate Italian and a member of the L211 Upper Intermediate French team. I have been a tutor, course director and school director at our French residential school at the University of Caen - Basse Normandie.
I am particularly interested in the teaching of listening and speaking skills, especially at a distance, and in the use of authentic speech in language teaching. I am also interested in the use of technology in language learning and teaching. I have contributed to projects exploring the use of online conferencing and online tools in our language modules.
My main research interest is the linguistic analysis and teaching of spoken French and English. I am currently doing research on the use of naturally-occurring speech in language teaching.
I was also involved in the TRIDEM project with colleagues from the Open University, the Université de Franche-Comté and Carnegie Mellon University in 2005 and 2006. This looked at bilingual telecollaboration between students of these three universities using synchronous and asynchronous online tools.
