Mini-bio: teaching and research

From a background in linguistics, lexicology and discourse analysis, I went on to teach French as a foreign language when I came to The Open University to lead a team in charge of developing the University’s first ever programme of distance-taught languages. This programme used technology to assist the development of skills concerned with speaking in interaction (in this case, with others who were sometimes in distant countries or even continents). Media for achieving remote interaction increasingly include Internet-based communication systems allowing virtual tutorials to be conducted, and voice-supported collaborative work to take place, across distances. From 2000 to 2005, I oversaw the roll-out of one such system to 7000 language students at The Open University. My research, within the Centre for Research in Education and Educational Technology is directed at the pedagogical and epistemological implications of changes in the way that we learn, teach and communicate, now that we have such systems at our disposal.

Academic publishing activities

I am on the Editorial Boards of journals ALSIC, ReCALL, Language Learning and Technology and  Distances et Savoirs.

Research interests

Mediation of learning and teaching in Internet-based settings, learning conversations and peer learning in computer-mediated communication, the semiotics of multimodal environments and cultural practises related to their use, as well as corpus-building to facilitate research on learner interactions collected from such environments.

Teaching Interests

From a background in linguistics I came to the Open University in 1991 to lead the team developing the University’s first ever distance-taught language degree, starting with French modules, later followed by German and Spanish. Italian is to follow soon.  Aimed at adult learners, these courses innovate in their mode of tuition, through real-time voice-over-Internet group conferencing. Teaching specialisms:  methodologies for the learning needs of distance-taught students and the use of teleconferencing tools in the development of language conversation skills.

Research Interests

Please provide details of your current research including research grants, recent publications, student supervision, measures of esteem etc.

In progress: ODIL project involving O.U. and four French universities, to study learner interactions online, in order to define interdisciplinary frameworks for research into second-language learning and to develop methods for analysing data from such environments.
End-of-project conference : 5-7 June 2007

Forthcoming 2007: visiting professorship to ENS Lyon.

Membership of Scientific Boards:
• ReCALL journal
• Flinders University Languages Group Online Review (FULGOR)
