Welcome to Athena SWAN at The Open University

The Athena SWAN Charter was launched in 2005 by Advance HE to work with and recognise higher education institutes that helped advance the careers of women in STEM roles.

The charter has since been expanded to cover gender diversity work in arts, humanities, social sciences, business and law, and professional and support roles for trans staff and students. It also recognises work undertaken to address gender equality more broadly and not just barriers to progression that affect women.

As an Athena SWAN member, the OU is strongly committed to the career advancement and promotion of all staff. We're proud to have gained our first Athena SWAN Bronze Institutional Award in April 2013, and to achieve a bronze renewal in April 2016. The award recognises good practice in supporting gender equality and celebrates our inclusive culture.

Our Action Plan 2016-2019, developed for the 2016 submission and approved by the University Research Committee, committed the OU to further development and progress in the lead up to reapplying for the bronze award in November 2020 (the result will be announced in spring 2021).
