Stonewall Workplace Index

What is the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index?

The Stonewall Workplace Equality Index (WEI) is an evidenced-based benchmarking process which enables the OU to review and evaluate its achievements and progress on LGBT equality in the workplace in areas such as: policy, staff engagement, community engagement and career development.

According to Stonewall: The highest performing organisations are celebrated as Stonewall Top 100 employers, enhancing their brand as an employer and service provider of choice.

The Open University and Stonewall

We are delighted to announce that The Open Univesity has participated in the 2016 Stonewall Workplace Equality Index. Our submission outlined our LGBT activities and achievements for 2014/2015.

Some of our achievements include:

  • Hosting of various events to celebrate LGBT History Month
  • Working closely with the LGBT@OU staff network to help shape OU policies on LGBT issues
  • Sponsoring LGBT Positive Role Model award at the 2014 National Diversity Awards
  • Internal work around data monitoring to inform and enhance our equality/LGBT-related policies
  • OU academics authoring and publishing of LGBT-related research
  • Working with other organisations to encourage LGBT inclusivity within the community.

What's Next?

Having been through the WEI process, we have identified a number of areas on which we could build, to further enhance our LGBT work. In the coming year we will continue to work towards:

  • Developing and implementing an institutional action plan for sexual orientation equality
  • Improving staff disclosure levels - sexual orientation disclosure increased from 28% in 2013 to 52% in 2014.
  • We also look forwad to the new OU VC's announcement of the OU LGBT champion
