If you are purchasing a voucher for someone

Q. Who are the vouchers suitable for?
A. Any adult who has an interest in the subject and an interest in learning should be able to cope with OU study at the appropriate level. Students must be aged 18 or over at the time the course starts.
For people who are new to OU study we suggest starting with a short course - ideal for introducing a new subject as well as developing invaluable study skills. Degree level courses increase in difficulty from Level 1 to Level 3. Study at Postgraduate level, for those who already have a degree, will require evidence of previous qualifications. Almost all of our courses require the use of a computer. Please check the course description for full details.
Please note that course prices differ in the UK and overseas. Some of our courses can be studied worldwide but please check on our website to find out which courses and locations are available.

Q: What if my vouchers are worth more than the course I want to study?
Overpayment using vouchers cannot be refunded. However, you can underpay with a voucher, and make up the difference with a credit/debit card or cheque, or by applying for an Open University Student Budget Account (OUSBA).

Q: What if I’m already studying with the OU?
A: You have two choices if you receive a voucher and you’re already studying with the OU:
You can redeem your voucher against your current Open University Student Budget Account (OUSBA) if you have one, reducing the amount left to pay on your account. In this case you would send your voucher to OUSBA together with your P.I. number and they would credit your account.

Alternatively, you can use your voucher to register for your next OU course.

Q: What if the course costs more than the vouchers I have?
A: There are three options open to you in that case:
You can pay for your course fees with multiple vouchers. You can pay the outstanding balance using a credit/debit card or cheque.
Or you could apply to OUSBA for an Open University Student Budget Account which allows you to spread the payment of your course into manageable monthly payments at competitive rates of interest.
You may be eligible for financial assistance. You could also be entitled to help with other costs associated with study such as computers, travel and childcare. You’ll find further details about financial support on our website where you’ll also find an online calculator which will help you to work out whether you’re eligible. Alternatively, please speak to one of our trained advisers.

You may be surprised at just how much help is available. UK government funds have increased - a resident of England, working full-time with an income of less than £26,000 p.a., may now be entitled to some degree of financial support.

Please note that this applies to funding for students resident in England only. See the website or request our leaflet to find out about funding in Wales, Scotland and outside the UK.
