Welcome to the webpages of the Social History of Learning Disability research group.
We are a group of people at the Open University who are researching
the history of learning disability in several different ways:
We run annual conferences
We produce life
stories
The Open University holds the Maureen Oswin archive
We write books and papers.
Our 2011 conference was held on Tuesday 12th and Wednesday 13th July 2011, and was entitled Friendships, Networks and Learning Disabilities: friends' stories and stories about friends.
You can view the programme, read abstracts and listen to the audios from the 2011 conference on the Annual Conferences page.
You can read abstracts for previous conferences and seminars.
At our Testimonies
of Resistance in Learning Disability History conference we made video recordings of conference speakers. You can watch the video testimonies to find out what our speakers had to say on the topic of resistance.

A sad farewell to Doris Thorne
We are sad to report that Doris Thorne, a long-standing friend of the SHLD group, died on 3rd September 2011, aged 70. Doris worked with members of the SHLD group to tell her life story ('Goodbye All the Nurses') and to recall songs of resistance from her institutional days. She was a truly extraordinary woman.
