I am a Research Associate in the Faculty of Health and Social Care, and a member of the team responsible for research development in the Faculty.

I am a social gerontologist working mainly with qualitative and biographical methods. My core research interests are in age and ageing, and how and where people live as they grow older. I am interested in relationships between generations, and in people's daily lives, especially in mid-life and later. Because we all live in specific times and places I am interested in investigating how aspects of the physical, social, technological and emotional environments that we inhabit present challenges and opportunities to individuals and communities. This leads me to an interest in the intersection of personal lives and public policy, especially as it affects older people.

Recently I have been involved in studies of public places; age discrimination; and extra care housing. I am currently working with others on:

  • a study of the outcomes for people who move from hospital into a care home after being diagnosed with dementia

  • projects to make it easier for older people to find out about and use new technologies

  • a project to gather information about what older people with high support needs want out of life.

Josie Tetley and I are the review editors for Ageing&Society. Please contact Stella Allinson (s.m.allinson@open.ac.uk) if you have a book related to ageing that you would like to be considered for review. If you are interested in becoming a reviewer for A&S, please contact us about your particular area(s) of expertise.

I am a member of a number of research groups: the Centre for Ageing and Biographical Studies (CABS) (see the CABS Blog below); the Nursing Research Group; and the cross-faculty Biographical Methods Cluster.
