Professor Monica Dowling is Head of Department for Social Work in the Faculty of Health and Social Care.
Prior to joining the The Open University, Professor Dowling was a Senior Lecturer in Social Work in the Department of Health and Social Care at Royal Holloway College, University of London, and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of History and Social Sciences.
Professor Dowling graduated with a BA in Applied Social Studies and Certificate of Qualification in Social Work (CQSW) from University of Hertfordshire (1975). She worked as a community and youth worker and a social worker before completing her Certificates in Education and Educational Administration at Middlesex University (1982) and a Diploma in British Social Policy (1988) and a PhD on Poverty and Social Work (1994), both at the University of Sheffield.
