My PhD research thesis is "Using technology to provide education to children in crisis and conflict areas- The case of Syrian refugee children". The aim of the project is to use technology to cover the gaps that preventing the children in crisis, war zone, refugee camps and conflict areas from getting education. My main concern is on the case of the Syrian children that are suffering from the conflict in Syria that left millions of them without a shelter, shools and in many cases without getting any sort of education and having no connection with the rest of the world. I am trying to develop an educational system/software that uses interactive methods to provide the most critical information that children need nowadays. The educational software shall consider the lifestyle and circumstances that these children are living with which may affect their mental wellness, ability to attend school and the expected technical obstacles. So I am trying to find a way to combine different subjects into topics to give children a large diversity of information withing a small time using interactive methodes that attract children into participating in the learning process. This system consists of interactive educational curriculum, teaching by topic, short films, games and other different methods with special interest in the mental and psychosocial problems that these children may be dealing with.
I have always had a special interest in children education. I worked in Syria as a volunteer teacher in a summer school for almost 5 years, teaching children maths, physics, science and sport (2005- 2010). This has given me a very good experience in understanding the teaching process in general and specifically teaching children.
As a Syrian citizen, I have always been searching for solutions for many of the problems in my home country. In March 2012 I was invited by the Swedish Institute to a workshop for “The Democratic Exchange Forum” (DXF-SWE 2012). I have been invited by organizations such as the Swedish institute (2012), the University of Bradford (2012), Leeds University (2014) as a speaker in events about the Syrian conflict from a humanitarian perspective.
