Miss Popi Anastasiou

Professional biography

I am currenty a second-year PhD Candidate in the Institute of Educational Technology at The Open University. My PhD research, funded by the Leverhulme Trust, is entitled: 'Digital Storytelling in a STEM class: a lesson to be learned. My supervisory team consists of Dr. Anne Adams, Dr. Liz Chamberlain, Dr. Natalia Kucirkova and Prof. Nick Braithwaite. 

The purpose of this study is to explore how the use of digital storytelling in STEM learning can facilitate pupils’ understanding of particular concepts, and thus impact upon teaching practice. In doing so, a combination of quantitative with qualitative methods will be employed.

My research experience includes two Masters Degrees, the MRes in Education and Social Sciences from King's College London (2008) and the MSc in Digital Education from the University of Edinburgh (2015), while i have conducted a series of both qualitative and quantitative studies, among which included was research on environmental education, ICT in primary education, cognitive development; science education. During my MSc Digital Education, at the University of Edinburgh, I practiced with game-based learning activities, online course design, information literacy procedures and research methods design. In addtion, I have worked as a research assistant in the European Project IRIS (Interests and Recruitment in Science Education (2009) at King's College London.

Extensive research training is also being taken since the first year of the PhD that includes attending a series of doctoral workshops, events, the Leverhulme sessions, the CARLG sessions and events and by participating in various competitions and conferences.

 

 

 

Research interests

My research interests mainly consider e-learning, ICT in education in parallel with primary children's cognitive development and understanding. I am also interested in qualitative methods, such as interviews and focus groups, intervention, case studies and quantitative methods, including learning analytics, SPSS and content analysis.
