The Computers and Learning Research Group (CALRG) investigates ways in which computers can be used to improve the quality of education and to support learners. The CALRG is a large group, currently over 30 members, characterised by its diversity and its inter-faculty nature which lends breadth and richness to our research.
The group aims
- to serve as a focal point for computers and learning research,
- to support and maintain interdisciplinary collaborations,
- to provide a source of information and expertise relating to the effective use of learning technologies (in primary, secondary, higher and further education) and the research methodologies used within relevant fields of study
The CALRG has an ongoing commitment to postgraduate research and aims to provide a vibrant research culture for all members.
CALRG Research activities
The group engages in a wide range of research activities across the five broad areas indicated below:
- Computer Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL)
- Evaluation
- Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Learning Design (includes social and affective processes)
- Technology Enhanced Learning (includes applications in particular subject areas); mobile technologies and theoretical approaches
- Inclusiveness and Accessibility (includes accessible education media work such as the Accessibility Primer, Accessibility links and describing graphical content for visually disabled students in Higher Education)
We also use the Jennie Lee Research laboratory facilities for empirical work to capture video records of human-computer interaction.
CALRG Events
CALRG holds an annual two to three day conference to share and showcase the group’s research as well as symposia on particular research themes which involve staff, research students and external academics.
