Research Studentships
Supervised Open University PhD students work with organisations on research projects to help the external sponsor organisations grow and thrive. External sponsors decide the extent to which their involvement is advertised and are involved in scoping a viable project proposal for a programme of student-conducted research that addresses the needs of the organisation and the requirements of the PhD programme.
Project Partnerships
IET seeks the involvement of non academic partners in our postgraduate research. Below we have listed a number of potential projects where we would welcome partnership. This could take a number of forms:
- Fully funding a studentship project over 3 or 4 years (at £18,000 per annum)
- Part funding a studentship project over 3 or 4 years (typically 50%)
- Providing placements for students to carry out part of their research (e.g. in the gaming industry)
- Supporting the student with resources such as software
The studentship projects indicate some of the research areas where we are seeking partnerships. They can also be viewed as exemplars of such projects. If you have further ideas about areas in which you would like to work with us (either as a potential student or sponsor), or are interested in some of the following, but would like to suggest slightly different directions, please talk to us about your ideas:
- Using advanced research methods to investigate learning using representations
- Children led investigations enabled by technology
- Engaging disabled students online: disabled students experiences of online studies in Higher Education
- Investigating the educational potential of game innovations
- Investigating the implications of new developments in web technologies for accessibility
- Prototyping educational refinements to games
- Supporting domains with specific notational requirements for blind or visually impaired students
IET Research Studentships selection
The Open University has a rigorous selection process for PhD applicants and external funders are consulted about recruitment, with the University being responsible for academic judgements of recruitment and progress throughout the study period. Supervision teams are also subject to University selection procedures.
Research Studentships usually commence in October.
The Digital & Educational Technology Research Showcase event 2011 highlighted the Research Studentships.
