Diaspora remittances, social policy and development: Nigerian and Ghanaian senders’ perspectives and experiences

Drawing on a qualitative study of senders of remittances among a group of UK-based senders, this presentation spotlights key aspects of sending practices and the social contexts (including of social protection) that generate, propel and sustain sending. We draw attention to the importance of transnational family and kin networks as a factor in sending dynamics and international development finance more generally, and highlight the importance of a transnational perspective for understanding contemporary work and welfare in Britain and beyond.
