Making Medicines in Africa: Book Launch

Wed, 23 March 2016, 15:00 to 18:30

Churchill Room, Goodenough College, Mecklenburgh Square, London WC1N 2AB

In sub-Saharan Africa, although international funding has dramatically improved access to HIV and TB medication, access to essential medicines remains generally dreadful. In response, OU and African researchers have been working together to investigate whether improved manufacturing of pharmaceuticals in Africa could offer an effective solution, creating a path to more accessible and sustainable health care for all.

Now, a landmark free open-access book, Making Medicines in Africa: The Political Economy of Industrialisation for Local Health, published by Palgrave under a Creative Commons Licence, sets out to unpack what it might take to make this happen. Edited by Maureen Mackintosh, Geoffrey Banda, Paula Tibandebage and Watu Wamae, the book includes a rich selection of contributions from their IKD colleagues and associates.

Speakers at the book's official launch will include Dr Janet Byaruhanga (African Union Commission, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia) and Professor Luigi Orsenigo (University Institute for Advanced Studies, Pavia, Italy).
