Aid and Development: A Brief Introduction

A new book from Professor Myles Wickstead, placing aid and development firmly in their historical context, will be published by Oxford University Press on 25 June. Before joining the OU as Visiting Professor (International Relations), Myles’s career with the Department for International Development and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office spanned representing the UK on the Board of the World Bank as well as being British Ambassador to Ethiopia and Djibouti and Head of Secretariat to the Commission for Africa.

Aid and Development: a Brief Introduction is thus based on the author’s long first-hand experience of both aid and development. Designed for the general and specialist reader alike, the book starts shortly after World War II showing how aid and development were influenced by the Cold War and the decolonisation process. It traces the path by which the reduction of poverty has taken centre-stage, suggests ways in which international institutions should adjust to reflect the shifting balance of global power, and then brings readers up to date with an examination of the priorities for the new Sustainable Development Goals.

In the words of BBC World Affairs Correspondent Mike Wooldridge, Aid and Development: a Brief Introduction 'should be essential reading for every incoming government minister, civil servant and diplomat dealing with aid and development around the world, and for students of the subject'.
