Examining refugee justice and asylum

Two new books on refugee justice and asylum by Dr Victoria Canning, Lecturer in Criminology at The Open University, will launch later this year.

‘Strategies for Survival, Recipes for Resistance’ (edited by Jasmin Caur, Victoria Canning, Anstey Gilley, Elisabeth Kabemba, Amina Rafique and Jennifer Verson) is a collection of photography, poetry, recipes, musical reflection and stories of the fight for refugee justice.

‘Gendered Harm and Structural Violence in the British Asylum System’ (Victoria Canning) is based on ten years of research and argues that the process of seeking asylum in Britain is not only very difficult, but actually inflicts emotional, physical, and relational harm on those who go through it. It further argues that destitution and relentless uncertainty compound people’s experiences of loss or violence, and sanctuary itself often becomes another form of politicised persecution.

The books will be launched at an invitation-only event in Liverpool on 29 November, in collaboration with (and support of) Migrant Artists Mutual Aid (MaMa).
